Summary: This work traces the historical trajectory of the Central Library of the Federal University of Espírito Santo, drawing on documentary records and the oral histories of current and former staff members, who serve as key participants and custodians of
memory, with the aim of preserving the institution’s memory. The trajectory of university libraries in Brazil parallels the creation and evolution of higher education institutions, participating in the processes of teaching, research, and outreach, and contributing to the education of students, researchers, and citizens. The Central Library of the Federal University of Espírito Santo follows this same legacy; however, its historical trajectory has not been systematically documented, which represents a gap in the preservation of institutional memory. As an extension of the research, the following specific objectives are outlined: to delineate the institutional origins of the Central Library; to describe the spatio-temporal chronology of the Central Library, from the Central Library Service to the 30th-anniversary celebration; to report on the challenges, achievements, and progress experienced by the unit throughout its history; and to highlight the role of the university library in preserving institutional memory. Regarding methodology, it employs a qualitative approach, characterized, in relation to the objectives, as exploratory-descriptive. With regard to methodological procedures and instruments, it opts for the use of bibliographic and documentary research, case studies, and oral history (as the guiding technique for interviews and testimonies), thereby promoting data triangulation. As a result of the research, it describes the historical trajectory of the Central Library based on documentary records and oral history, as well as a chronological account of the events, problems, and challenges overcome by the institution, highlighting its contribution to the preservation of institutional memory.
