Summary: This research aimed to investigate how the personal archive of Jerusa Margarida Gueiros Samu and the UFES institutional archives linked to the Arts Center’s documentary collection—held by the UFES Directorate of Institutional Documentation—relate to the construction of institutional and social memory associated with the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES), centering on the creation of the Art and Research Gallery. The choice of subject was justified by the pivotal role played by the professor and visual artist in establishing this cultural space within the university during her tenure between 1961 and 1987. To carry out the research, the study analyzed the relationships between records in the professor's personal archive, the institutional archives held by the aforementioned directorate, and the processes of forming UFES's institutional memory and the social memory of Espírito Santo, viewing the university gallery as a cultural mechanism for symbolic mediation. Additionally, a bibliographic survey was conducted using the following keywords: “personal archive and institutional memory,” “personal archive and social memory,” “memory,” “institutional memory,” “social memory,” “personal archive,” “personal archive and Jerusa Margarida Gueiros Samu,” and “Jerusa Margarida Gueiros Samu.” Methodologically, this was a qualitative study with an exploratory-descriptive approach, based on a bibliographic survey and documentary research conducted at the UFES General Archive (specifically within the
aforementioned collection) and in Jerusa Samu’s personal archive. The results highlighted the complementary nature of personal and institutional archives in constructing memory, demonstrating that Jerusa Margarida Gueiros Samu’s personal collection transcends the private sphere by contributing significantly to the recording, preservation, and dissemination of cultural and institutional processes. It was concluded that the Art and Research Gallery serves as a space for the production and activation of
institutional and social memory; simultaneously, the recognition of personal archives as sources of information reinforces their value as cultural and informational heritage, contributing to the advancement of studies in the field of Information Science.
