Summary: This study examines the process of documenting and preserving memory artifacts at the Novo Império Samba School in Vitória (ES). It stems from the recognition that samba schools function as spaces of cultural production in which memory is not
centralized in institutionalized collections, but distributed among individuals, practices, objects, and relationships that are interwoven in the daily life of the samba school. This study adopts a qualitative approach with an exploratory-descriptive focus, employing ethnographic, bibliographic, and documentary research, participant observation, and semi-structured interviews. It is understood that preserving the memory of samba schools is not a formalized procedure, but rather an ongoing process, integrated into the school’s dynamics and directly linked to the carnival cycle, in which preparation, rehearsal, performance, and reorganization follow one another in a sequential manner. As a result, it identifies three fundamental dimensions of memory preservation—material, narrative, and practical—that constitute an interdependent system in which memory is simultaneously recorded, narrated, and lived. It also highlights the central role of individuals in this process. It also highlights the central role of individuals in this process. As a contribution to Information Science, the study broadens our understanding of information practices in cultural contexts by recognizing the centrality of orality, materiality, and institutionality in the production and circulation of memory.
